Father Schmitz was a unique figure in the landscape of the Holy Land. Between 1908 and 1922, he collected hundreds of wild animals and established the first Museum of Natural History in the Middle East. The story of a Barn Owl chick named Buma (the Arabic name of a the Barn Owl) who grew up at Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, in the national initiative of using Barn Owls and Kestrels as biological pest control agents in agriculture fields. Flying with the birds / By Yossi Leshem & Ofer Bahat - "Flying with the Birds" won the prestigious Maj. General Yitzhak Sadeh prize for military writing in 1994. The late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the commander of the Israeli Air Force, Maj. General Eitan Ben-Eliahu, were both present at the ceremony. This was the first time in the 23 years the prize existed that a book covering biological theme won a prize for military writing.
